The Birds and The Bees Special Needs Style.....

Happy National Napping Day!

It is raining over here in the PNW, and we are experiencing lots of it and trying to recover from springing forward this past weekend. Do you all have Daylight Saving time where you are at too? It takes a minute to get acclimated to that loss of an hour, but we are adjusting. Well, it is that time of year again when school districts ask the parents about HIV/STDs and the "Birds and the Bees" classes.

It has happened every year since Elementary school, which we both felt was just too soon, but now that our 16-year-old is nearing his 12th grade year, we felt that it is time. I know that every parent is not created equal and we all parent differently but at the end of the day, I would rather discuss these touchy subjects with me present, then for our autistic-curious, needs-to-know-everything-now-teen, ask a stranger, the internet or random person😟. This way I can break it down and chunk it up, so that there is a clear understanding of what NOT to do in certain situations and how to handle certain situations as well in the company of different genders. Wow that was a mouthful, LOL!

At the end of the day, do what is best for you and your child, especially if they are special needs. They don't stay 5 years old forever and do eventually leave the nest, so prepare them for what is going to come(inevitably). Better late than never, right?

On that note, have a fantastic rest of your day/week and keep advocating for your special needs son or daughter.

November 2023 Winter

" As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases." https://homeschoolspecneedstidbits.com/affiliate-disclosure/  Hello Everyone,  Can you believe that we are already in November? My oldest is in her 3rd year of college and chose to do her studies remotely and loves it. As you already know, our youngest is autistic and he is in his final year of high school. Lots to think about and do in this final push and the journey still continues.  We are anticipating just relaxing this 3-day weekend, so that we have time to refresh, take naps and whatever else is in store. So far, we have had a bunch of rain that just keeps on coming here in the PNW, but it did finally stop today with more in the forecast, LOL! If you are trying to figure out what movies are out to watch this holiday season, we can think of a few that are our family's favorites during the holidays.  Hope you have a safe 3-day Veteran's Day weekend! A Tale of Two Types of Learning in the Midst of a Pandemic/ COVID-19 ..

Lots of people lost their lives and the normal that most people came to know and love changed forever. Some people, especially educators, were not sure how they were going to educate all of their students in Kindergarten-12th grade, especially those with special needs.  Make back to school easy with schedules, fidgets and sitting wedges from NationalAutismResources.com Some school districts did not know what to do and were faced with how they were going to educate students online and address the needs of those that struggled already academically, emotionally, financially

The Teen Years in Autism

"As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases." https://homeschoolspecneedstidbits.com/affiliate-disclosure/   The teenage years of autism are downright hard and challenging when it comes to autistic boys. I think our son is at his highest, in regard to his anxiety level, and thankfully we have been able to get him to talk more about what is bothering him (that doesn't always work) but helping him find his voice and us listening helps him get it out of his system.  We have found a temporary fix to him navigating all of the news headlines of the day and there are a lot and as we all know NONE of it is good news. It is like once he reads a headline, this invades his entire day, and his homework doesn't get done ***SIGH***. So, we have decided to take away his phone temporarily and only return it to him after he is done with his homework. It seems to be working really well and he is definitely not as preoccupied or distracted by the world around him.  School
